Gianvito Martino

Dr. Martino is based at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, where he led the Neuroimmunology Unit from 1997, directed the Neuroscience Division from 2008 to 2016, and, from 2016, has served as its Scientific Director. He is Full Professor of Experimental Biology and Vice Rector for Research and Third Mission at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. He was one of the founders of the Italian Association of Neuroimmunology (AINI), of which he was President from 2009 to 2012, and of the European School of Neuroimmunology (ESNI) and of the Global Schools of Neuroimmunology (GSNI) of which he is still today the co-director. He was Vice President and President of the International Society of Neuroimmunology (ISNI). He has been a member of the scientific council of numerous national and international scientific societies. He has received numerous scientific awards including the Rita Levi-Montalcini Prize, the Ottorino Rossi International Prize for Neuroscience, the Claugus Carrier Award from the Foundation for a better world. His scientific interests, which resulted in the publication of over 300 scientific articles, range from the study of the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying immune-mediated central nervous system disorders to the development of gene therapy tools and innovative therapies with neural stem cells for the treatment of these disorders.
