Tomoyuki Furuyashiki, M.D., Ph.D., is the Professor and Chair of the Division of Pharmacology at the Graduate School of Medicine, Kobe University, Japan. He earned his Ph.D. from Kyoto University in 2001 and was appointed Assistant Professor at the same university in 2003. From 2004 to 2008, he served as an Associate Research Scientist at Johns Hopkins University. Then, he returned to Kyoto University, where he held positions as Assistant and later Associate Professor. In 2014, he assumed his current role at Kobe University. Dr. Furuyashiki is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research on the neuronal and behavioral roles of inflammatory molecules in the brain under psychological stress. His exploration of the biological mechanisms of stress has led to significant discoveries regarding the roles and mechanisms of microglial activation and leukocyte mobilization in chronic stress-induced neuronal and behavioral changes. His contributions to the field have been honored with numerous awards, including the Best President’s Award from the Astellas Foundation for Research on Metabolic Disorders (2015) and the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology Brain Health Basic Research Award (2024). Dr. Furuyashiki has also demonstrated his leadership in the scientific community as an executive board member of the Japanese Pharmacological Society and the Japanese Society of Neuropsychopharmacology. Furthermore, as a member of the Science Council of Japan, he actively promotes advancements in mental health research within the nation and beyond.
