Prof. Dr. Veit Rothhammer is Full Professor (W3) and Heisenberg Professor of Neuroimmunology at the Department of Neurology, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany, where he also serves as Deputy Head of the department. He studied medicine at the University of Würzburg, the University of Toronto, and the Université de Strasbourg, completing his neurology residency at TU Munich. After board certification in neurology, he pursued a research fellowship in experimental neuroimmunology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. In 2018, he received his habilitation in neurology at TU Munich, from where he transitioned to his current position in 2020. Prof. Rothhammer’s research focuses on autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system, with particular interest in progressive multiple sclerosis, the gut–brain axis, and epigenetics, with particular focus on the role of astrocytes and microglia in CNS repair mechanisms. He has been awarded several prestigious prizes, including the Sobek Junior Award for Multiple Sclerosis Research, the Oppenheim Award, the Karl-Heinz Hoffmann Award, and the German Society for Neurology Science Award. He is principal investigator of an ERC Starting Grant and multiple DFG-funded projects.
