Dr. Atsushi Kadowaki is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Neurology, Osaka University, Graduate School of Medicine. He has expertise in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and the animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and clinical practice of Neurology.
He graduated Osaka University for his MD and obtained a board of Neurology after clinical trainings. He received his PhD in Medicine from Osaka University with the work with Dr. Yamamura in National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry, studying about the role of gut immunity in MS. Thereafter, he studied about the mechanisms of astrocyte pathological responses in MS with Dr. Quintana (Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School).
His research goal is to understand the mechanisms of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in MS and other intractable neurological diseases through studying peripheral immune system and glial cells, and develop new therapies. He is currently interested in the pathological responses of astrocytes in diseases, particularly related to mitochondrial dysfunction. He has also been interested in the effect of gut-environment influenced T cells in the development and progression of MS. His research is inspired by daily clinical practice. He obtained several awards including the ISNI Presidential Award in the Inaugural Meeting of the Asia-Pacific School of Neuroimmunology and the Best Paper Award of National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry, Japan.
