The Microbiology, Immunology & Genetics Department at the University of North Texas Health Science Center is seeking to hire a Research Scientist I to join our team. Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
* The research scientist will fulfill multiple roles as a bench scientist as well as an advisor to students, post-doctoral researchers, and technical support staff within the research group.
* The position requires skills and experience in developing extensions of existing cellular and animal models of neurodegeneration and HIV CNS infection.
* The researcher will design and perform experiments to investigate the neurodegenerative mechanisms of glia and how to therapeutically modulate them to improve disease outcomes.
* The scientist will analyze data, write manuscript & grants, and develop novel research directions based current work performed in the research group.

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
* Experience in HIV & neurodegeneration research.
* Strong set of skills in animal models.
* Strong set of skills in mentoring and project management.
* Strong set of skills in writing reports, manuscripts and grants.
* Independent research abilities and good publication record.
* Strong oral and written communication skills.
* Ph.D. +5 years experience in Neuroscience, Neuroimmunology, Pharmacology or related field.
* Knowledge and understanding of neural mechanisms of drug abuse.
* Experience in maintaining an active laboratory, including training employees and students in novel techniques.
* Published research in biochemistry, cell-biology, pharmacology, neurobiology and behavioral neuroscience fields.
* Broad base of laboratory skills in biochemical and cell-based fluorescence assay development, protein biochemistry, computer-assisted molecular modeling, drug design, animal behavior, neuroanatomy/neurophysiology.
* Competent in preparing and presenting platform presentations, grant/manuscript/technical report writing.
* Familiarity with IACUC, IRB and IBC governing bodies and regulations.
* Ability to work as a part of a team.
